What is a tier on tier shutter?
A tier on tier shutter is a full-height shutter made of two stacked panels (a top tier and a bottom tier) that operate independently. This allows you to, for example, open the top to allow daylight in while keeping the bottom closed for privacy.
How do café style shutters differ from tier on tier shutters?
Café style shutters cover only the lower half of the window, giving privacy at street level while keeping the top portion open permanently for daylight.
What windows should not have shutters?
Most windows can have shutters, but a few situations may need an alternative style or specialist fitting, for example:
- Very wide openings where hinged panels would be awkward. Tracked shutters are often better because they slide.
- Windows with obstructions (handles, vents, tiles, radiators, or very shallow recesses) that could prevent panels from opening cleanly.
For situations like these, made to measure surveying is extra important.
Do shutters cause damp?
Shutters themselves don’t “cause” damp. Damp problems are usually driven by excess moisture, condensation, leaks, and inadequate ventilation. The key prevention is good ventilation and moisture management (especially in winter and in humid rooms).
One practical note: any window covering (including shutters) can reduce airflow right against cold glass if kept tightly closed all the time, so it’s worth:
- using existing vents / regular airing
- choosing ABS shutters in kitchens/bathrooms where humidity is routine.
